A new technology to block mobile signal for drivers is being considered by the Department of Transport to crack down on motorists who use their phone.

Plans for an exploratory meeting with network providers and handset manufacturers in the new year to discuss the technology are being finalised, Mashable understands.

An incredibly strong deterrent

"We are determined to crack down on mobile phone use at the wheel," a spokesperson for the Department of Transport said in a statement.

"Our plans to double penalties for this serious crime should act as an incredibly strong deterrent. We will continue to explore what more can be done to tackle this crime."

The government has introduced tougher penalties for anyone who uses their phone while driving.

Under new rules, drivers will get six points on their licence and face a £200 fine.

New drivers could be made retake their test the first time they are caught.

If the offence results in a death, a driver can be jailed for life.
